Using Factable well

Essential steps to calculate nutrition values, understand their limits and review your label before bringing a product to market.

Quick start

1. Prepare your ingredients

Search the Canadian Nutrient File or create a custom ingredient. Check units, values per 100 g and the source of your data.

2. Create your recipe

Add each ingredient with its actual quantity. Enter the final yield after cooking or processing.

3. Set the serving size

Choose a serving representative of the product sold. Yield and serving size directly affect every calculated value.

4. Review before printing

Review ingredients, quantities, units, nutrition values and rounding. Keep the documents supporting your data.

Accuracy of results

Calculations depend entirely on the quality of the information used: ingredient composition, quantities, processing losses or gains, final yield and declared serving size.

  • Use supplier data when it better represents your actual ingredient.
  • Update recipes whenever an ingredient, supplier or process changes.
  • Testing by an accredited laboratory may be appropriate to validate a finished product.
  • Do not make a nutrition claim solely because a calculated value appears to support it.

Compliance extends beyond the nutrition facts table

Depending on the product and how it is sold, other information may be required, including the common name, net quantity, ingredients, allergens, responsible business name and address, bilingual declarations and product-specific rules.

Always check the requirements for your situation before printing or marketing a product.
